Their challenge started right the moment they advanced to the next round of the Creativity Challenge. Yet it might just be what makes their journey more unforgettable than ever.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\r\n\r\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]What to do when a member decided to quit?<\/b>\r\n\r\nReceiving the news that she has got into the next round of Creativity Challenge Playground – VFCD 2022, Qu\u1ef3nh Giao was a little worried when she proposed initially was not accepted. She would have to work with a pair \u201cin the same boat\u201d as her: Duy Anh and Huy\u1ec1n Ch\u00e2u from H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i, 2000 kilometres away from where she lives.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nQu\u1ef3nh Anh then went online to learn more about Duy Anh and Huy\u1ec1n Ch\u00e2u and thought of different ways to collaborate upon realising that their areas of expertise\u2026 has nothing in common with her. At the same time, Giao was excited to come up with a never-before-seen combination between game and\u2026 knitting patterns (!).\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nHowever, the challenges persist with Duy Anh, not being able to arrange his schedule, decided to withdraw. Qu\u1ef3nh Giao knew she needs support, and therefore asked to change her registration status from \u201cindividual\u201d to \u201cteam\u201d. The Sun Lab, where she and three of her teammates are working well together, and Nguy\u1ec5n Huy\u1ec1n Ch\u00e2u, officially becomes a team.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_images_carousel images=”3402,3404,3406″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1662449990118{margin-bottom: 2rem !important;}”]Works by Qu\u1ef3nh Giao and The Sun Lab, showing their strength of product design with sustainable materials.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Not knowing anything about each other and never collaborate before, yet they have to build a brand new project in three months, and the geographical distance is no small obstacle. While other teams already have in their hands quite a detailed plan or concept, The Sun Lab and Ch\u00e2u only just began saying \u201chello\u201d through the laptop screen.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nApplying local materials and techniques in the product<\/b>\r\n\r\nHowever, after just two weeks of working together, the team of five has come up with the idea utilising local materials and traditional patterns – the strengths of its two leaders Qu\u1ef3nh Giao and Huy\u1ec1n Ch\u00e2u.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_images_carousel images=”3408,3414,3412,3410″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]Huy\u1ec1n Ch\u00e2u has experience in building businesses with communication and social impact, and is especially interested in traditional patterns. It is this common point that connects her to The Sun Lab.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The final product would be a kit which consists of sustainable kinnitng material along with a manual to help users easily create traditional patterns on their work. It can be use as a recreational activity in the after hours to relieve stress and increase concentration, while also practicing patience and creativity.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nBy making this product, the team wantss to attract young people\u2019s attention to age-old knitting techniques and its traditional values, which current approaches and communication have unintentionally viewed as old-fashioned and unappealing. When the matter of the youth\u2019s interest to traditions is addressed, this could be a solution to the livelihood for traditional craft villages with an abundant local material sources, but are at risk of disappearing.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n\u201cOur hope is to create a highly applicable product, not only focusing on the shapes and aesthetics but also, in a direct or indirect way, addressing social issues, such as evoking in young people the interest for traditional, sustainable natural material sources, and providing livelihoodss for artisans who are continuing the craft\u2026\u201d – said Qu\u1ef3nh Giao and Huy\u1ec1n Ch\u00e2u.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nChallenging yet also impromptu and different, how will The Sun Lab and Nguy\u1ec5n Huy\u1ec1n Ch\u00e2u build, develop this project and present it to the community? The Sun Lab\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\r\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3418″ img_size=”medium” css=”.vc_custom_1662450362163{margin-bottom: 2rem !important;}”][vc_column_text]Year of foundation: 2021<\/span>\r\n\r\nFields of operation: Product research and design, brand identity design, product photography<\/span>\r\n\r\nRoles in the project: Qu\u1ef3nh Giao – production design, Nh\u1eadt Kh\u00e1nh – exhibition space design, Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng Khanh – visual and graphic design, Nguy\u00ean Sa – UI design for the online archive of knitting patterns.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe Sun Lab consists of 04 women: guy\u1ec5n Ng\u1ecdc Qu\u1ef3nh Giao, Phan Nguy\u1ec5n Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng Khanh, Nguy\u1ec5n Tr\u1ea7n Nh\u1eadt Kh\u00e1nh, L\u01b0u Nguy\u1ec5n Nguy\u00ean Sa. Their dream is to one day in the near future have sufficient finance to open their own design studio. <\/span>\u201cAnd to do so, now our motto is \u2018one tree cannot amount to anything, four of them together and they get to work\u2019. Labour is glory!\u201d<\/span><\/i>\r\n\r\nQu\u1ef3nh Giao is the industrial designer in charge of product research and development, from sourcing sustainable materials to project management. Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng Khanh is the graphic designer\/illustrator, specialising in turning ideas into visualisations. Nh\u1eadt Kh\u00e1nh is the 3D artist with a focus on architecture and interior design. Nguy\u00ean Sa specialises in digital graphic design, who sees herself as a person who loves to explore new things and is not afraid of challenges.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThese four women have worked together in multiple projects, their strength being the diversity in design and high applicability of local\/traditional materials in products. <\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\r\n

Nguy\u1ec5n Huy\u1ec1n Ch\u00e2u<\/b><\/h3>\r\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3416″ img_size=”medium” css=”.vc_custom_1662450375864{margin-bottom: 2rem !important;}”][vc_column_text]Year of birth: 1986<\/span>\r\n\r\nFields of operation: Commerce and social impact project management\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nRole in the project: Expertise consultant and community engagement<\/span>\r\n\r\nNguy\u1ec5n Huy\u1ec1n Ch\u00e2u has more than 15 years of experience in social work with projects such as X\u00e2y Tr\u01b0\u1eddng Cho Em (Building Schools for Children), Action 4 L\u00f9ng T\u00e1m, as well as capacity support programmes for underprivileged people. She was given the scholarship in the Leadership for Sustainable Community Design programme in Japan, and is the co-founder of CA’ Library (the first art and architecture library in Hanoi), while also founded and manages VAN\u2022HOA, a creative solutions company inspired by local culture.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nWith an expertise completely different from the four women of The Sun Lab, her background leans more on market, commerce and social impact project management. However, Ch\u00e2u has long realised that culture is a potential driving force for sustainable socio-economic development, and therefore since 2017, she has been studying in-depth traditional cultural factors and craft villages to find long-term development solutions.
